Keen is committed to taking steps that lead to a better world. Since 2012, they've taken action by identifying and removing harmful chemicals in our supply chain, and replacing them with safe and effective alternatives. Some key examples are their PFC-free water repellent coating, environmentally preferred leather and eco-anti odor material.
PFC-free water durable repellent
PFCs (perfluorinated chemicals) are widely used in the outdoor industry for water repellency due to their durability, but they may contain carcinogens and they degrade slowly. So, KEEN switched to nontoxic alternatives that are equally effective. Today, KEEN is over 95% PFC-free.
Environmentally preferred leather
Tanning leather is traditionally a water-intensive process that leaves behind chemical waste. KEEN sources leather from Leather Working Group-certified tanneries, which use a closed-loop system to reduce water and energy use, eliminating wastewater pollution.
eco anti-odor
Foot odor is caused by bacteria, and traditional odor protection relies on pesticides, which can pollute waterways. Instead, KEEN uses natural probiotics, avoiding 15,400 lbs. of pesticides annually while achieving the same effectiveness.
