Tips for Dressing Your Kids for Winter Travel (Without the Guesswork)

Posted by Michelle Phua on

You've booked the tickets. You've sorted the itinerary. Now comes the part that keeps you up at night: packing.

If you're a Singaporean parent planning a December getaway to colder climates such as Japan, Korea, Taiwan, the US or Europe, you've probably asked yourself: "Will one jacket be enough?" "Should I buy Heattech?" "What if they're too hot... or too cold?". It can be stressful, especially if it’s your first time visiting a cold climate. So let’s take the stress out with a few easy steps and get you all ready for your winter holiday.

Step One: Master the art of smart layering

Layering is key to keeping kids warm and comfortable while being prepared for any sudden changes in weather or even for adjusting between indoors and outdoors. The key to layering is that each layer has a specific job:

1. Base Layer (Heattech or Thermals)

Purpose: Traps body heat and wicks moisture away from the skin
When to use: When there is wind chill or it is below 15 °C.
What we offer: The Elly Store doesn’t offer anything in this range but many parents like to purchase brands such as Uniqlo Heattech.

#Tip from Elly Moms: Some brands like Uniqlo even have different categories of Heattech for different temperatures, so look out for the one graded for your specific climate.

2. Mid Layer (Hoodie / Pullover / Sweater)

Purpose: Provides insulation to hold warmth in
When to use: Essential for windy days or when temperature drops below 10°C. Can be used in a two-layer strategy when temperatures are 10-15°C.
What we offer: The Elly Store's hoodies and pullovers are perfect here - comfortable enough for all-day wear.

#Tip from Elly Moms: The key is to make sure that you get the right size for mid layers so that you can fit the base layer underneath while also putting on another outer layer over it. Size up if you need to!

3. Outer Layer (Bomber Jacket / Coat)

Purpose: Shields against wind, rain, and cold air
When to use: Essential for windy days or when temperature drops below 15°C. Can be used in a two-layer strategy when temperatures are 10-15°C.
What we offer: The Elly Store's bomber jackets are ideal for layering in mild weather because they can be fully zipped in the front. Pair it with a double pom beanie for added protection!

#Tip from #Elly Moms: We wouldn’t recommend bomber jackets for temperatures below 15°C, or in heavy rain environments. For such climates, many parents prefer to use full winter waterproof jackets with hoodies that may have a further lining such as down.

The trick to layering is to choose each layer appropriately and be ready to change from one, two, or three layers throughout the day so kids stay warm but can still move and play comfortably.

Step Two: Dress for the specific temperature

We created a temperature-based dressing guide! Seoul in December is very different from Zurich, and what works in Taipei might be overkill in Hong Kong. The practical guide below will help you pack with confidence so it takes all the guesswork out.

#Tip 1 from Elly Moms: Do check the temperature again the week before you travel just to be sure because there could be dips in temperature or winters that start later.

#Tip 2 from Elly Moms: The most important parts to keep warm are the chest, head and neck, and hands and feet. So if you’re travelling to colder climates, don’t forget the small things like scarves, beanies, gloves and socks! Also, grab some heat packs to keep in your pockets to thaw your hands!

Shanghai Disneyland

A Magical December Destination: Shanghai Disneyland

So how do we bring the smart layering and city-specific climate dressing together? One great example is Shanghai.

Home to the newly opened Zootopia zone at Shanghai Disneyland, Shanghai offers the perfect blend of festive fun and manageable winter weather. December temperatures average 11-14°C during the day, dropping slightly in the mornings and evenings - ideal for layering without going overboard. A two-layer strategy will keep kids warm during the day especially if you’re running around the park, with an option of a third layer in the evenings for that fireworks show!

The Elly Store has got you covered with our Zootopia collection: cozy hoodies, and lightweight bomber jackets featuring their favourite characters. Let your little ones channel their inner Judy Hopps or Nick Wilde in cool comfort!

Perfect for:

  • Disneyland Park days exploring Zootopia Festive holiday photos
  • Staying warm and comfortable without bulk
  • Twinning with family and friends for those picture-perfect Disney moments!
